Chapter Two
Humility
Twilight didn't know he fell asleep until he woke up at moonhigh.
He sat up and stretched, his rings glowing. He was happy to accually see the shine, and made it brighter. He loved the luminescent yellow glow, it almost conforted him in this dark time. Twilight looked over to the forest, and sniffed. Many Murkrow were out, as he smelt, and luckily some Cricketot. Those were his normal night meal. His favourite food ever were really Zigzagoons, but they were out at day more than night. So Cricketots would have to do.
Twilight gave a last stretch and padded over to a thick bush, its broad leaves giving much cover. He scented a Cricketot, and moved in closer. It was just on the other side of the shrub, and he dimmed his ring glow. It helped for the surprize part. What Twilight did most of the time was sneak up on his prey, and scare them so hard they freeze. He usually dimmed his ring glow, then made them shine as bright as posible when scaring his prey. And that was what Twilight did, and as soon as he was about to leap at the Bug Type on the other side, he began to make his rings shine bright.
"Umbreon! Look, it's an Umbreon! Wow, never thought I'd have seen one of 'em." Squacked a voice from above. It threw Twilight off, and when he leaped and landed by the Cricketot, it was already alert and flew away swiftly. Twilight cursed under his breath and looked up to see three Murkrow, staring at him intently. He growled at them, baring his teeth, but the Murkrow didn't move, almost mocking him.
"He's mad, Gilbert," said one to the middle Murkrow, who's name was Gilbert.
Gilbert gave a obnoxious laugh. "Ch' ya! But what's he gonna do, Stella? Glow at me?" His squackish laugh made Twilight's fur along his back raise in annoyance. He already hated Gilbert.
The last Murkrow nudged Gilbert. "Look, Gil, now he's really mad. Better git goin', you know what I mean?" He has sense, Twilight thought.
Gilbert continued to laugh. "Nonsence, Rory. He's a weakling. Couldn't even catch a Cricketot!" He cackled and cawed until his feathers stood up. Twilight snarled, and made his rings glow an angry golden-yellow. His target was Gilbert, but with Rory and Stella on the side, he hoped he wouldn't hit them.
"I didn't get that Cricketot because of you!" Twilight growled, glaring at Gilbert. Stella and Rory side-stepped away from Gilbert on the branch they perched on. Why's he their leader, if no one even likes him? He thought.
Gilbert flew on a lower branch. "Idiot. That Cricketot was half asleep. You could've caught it, easily, even if I squacked at you. You're pathetic is what you are." He gave his annoying laugh again.
Twilight summoned a Shadow Ball in his throat. He aimed right at Gilbert and released it. It smacked Gilbert right on is chest, and he gave a terrified caw and fell to the forest floor. Twilight tried not to make the attack too powerful, but it seemed Gilbert was pretty hurt, so Twilight ran over to the fallen Murkrow.
"Kak! What was that for? It hurt! Kak kak!" Gilbert coughed, then looked up at his buddies. "Stell, go get the big guy. Teach this Umbreon a lesson! KAK!"
Stella didn't hesitate, and flew off in an instant. Twilight bit his tongue. What big guy? Uh oh, Twilight thought. There was only one other Pokemon that traveled with Murkrows... Honchkrows. Huge, powerful Honchkrows. Twilight's rings nearly dimmed to nothing as he worried about the beating that was soon to come. Why me?
And then, Stella appeared, and behind her was a huge Honchkrow, as Twilight feared. The brute had a large wingspan, and once he saw Gilbert, and angry look appeared in his red eyes. His wings glowed with steel, and before Twilight could even blink, the Steel Wing hit him hard on the chest. He was knocked over, hitting the tree Rory was perched, making him cackle. Twilight knew he had to fight, or this would be very humiliating.
He completely vanquished his ring glow, making him blend in with the shadows. Perfect for a Faint Attack. He snook up behind the Honchkrow, he was looking around madly, and he lept and slammed into the brute as hard as he could do. The Honchkrow gave a cry of pain, but swung around, facing Twilight. Suddenly Twilight felt a sharp pain on his side, from a Peck attack. Gilbert was beside him, and before he could attack the cheater, the Honchkrow came down on him for a Wing Attack. Feathers hit his side, and again Twilight was knocked over. He panted hard as he again summoned a Shadow Ball. He fired it at the Honchkrow, but he dodged and began flying at Twilight.
Suddenly, another Shadow Ball came from behind Twilight at slammed the Honchkrow. He faltered and lowered his altitude, and then completely stopped. Then Dark leaped out from behind a bush by Twilight, and landed on the Honchkrow. Using a Crunch attack finished off the Honchkrow, and with a defeated squack, flew away. Stella and Rory followed.
"Ha!" Gilbert laughed again, looking at Twilight. "Had to take two to defeat Buck, huh? You're still pathetic, Umbreon! Last of the Umbreons, and you're a failure! Kak kak kak kak kak!" His annoying laugh became even more annoying, and then he flew off to where Buck, Stella and Rory flew to. Twilight, gave a sigh. He was a failure. At least Murkrows know the truth, their only good quality, perhaps.
"You okay, Twi?" Asked Dark as he came over. "You look a little scratched. Did that Honchkrow get you bad?" The Mightyena began inspecting Twilight, to make sure.
"Yes," muttered Twilight, "it got my pride." He looked down.
"Twilight," said Dark sternly. "It's notlike the whole kingdom will hear about how Twilight was attacked by a Honchkrow. No one would care, anyways." He gave a smile. "Now c'mon, sleepy head, let's get out of here."
Twilight gave a fake smile and sat up, following Dark. The Mightyena led him to the stream he promised the other day, and as he said, it accually had cleaned itself. It was sparkling and clear, and Twilight could even see the bottom. Dark pranced around happily, then took a drink. He said it was good, so Twilight guessed it wasn't tainted. He tasted it, and found it to be the best water he'd ever tasted.
"Wonder how this happened," said Dark, thinking aloud. "Making the water clean."
Twilight swallowed his mouthful of water, then shrugged. "D'know, maybe some Legendary." He gave a jokey smile. He enjoyed teasing Dark about Legendaries. Out of all the things in the world, the thing that fasinated Dark the most was Legendaries, and that's saying a lot. Dark was interested into everything.
"Really? You think? Wow, a Legendary, right here! Imagine, Twi! One of the most powerful beings accually came here! Here!" Dark stared at his broken reflection in the water. "I wish I could meet a Legendary. Just see one at least. It would be so cool..." He trailed off in thought.
Twilight thought of the Legenadary he saw in his dream, the one speaking of the prophecy and the Eon Eight. He had met a Legendary. In fact, he was doing a task for a Legendary. If Dark knew, he would be envious of Twilight forever. I have to do this quest, Twilight thought, and I can't tell Dark. I have to leave him! Oh, would if he thinks I don't want to be his friend anymore? This is so horrible! Oh, why me??!! He relized that was the second time he'd thought that very saying, "why me", in the same night. Now this really sucks.
"Listen, Dark..." Twilight didn't know what to say. Saying 'Sorry, but I have to go somewhere, and you're not allowed to come.' wouldn't work. A story came to Twilight, and he hoped Dark would understand. "I've heard that their are some Umbreons on the far side of the mountains,"
"Uh-huh," said Dark, looking at him, focused. A first.
"Well, see... I wanted to see for myself. That they're other Umbreons out there, so I've decided to go there... I'm gonna be gone for a while."
"Then I'll come with." Dark said happily.
Twilight felt like a Steelix landed on him. "Well, see Dark... This seems a more personal thing to me. I mean, you're a Mightyena, so you don't know what it's like, 'cause there's lots of Mightyenas out there. But me--"
Dark interupted him. "I see what you mean, Twilight. You want to go alone," he sighed, "that's fine. But please, promise me something,"
"What?"
"That you'll return."
Twilight gave a confused look. "But, I'm just going to the mountains and back--"
Dark shook his head. "I know you, Twi. You're going somewhere far. You've always had a spark of adventure in you. While me, well, I prefer to learn stuff from other Pokemon. So you go on, Twi, but promise to return safely, and tell me what you did."
"I promise," vowed Twilight. He couldn't believe how wise Dark sounded suddenly, as if he really grew up.
Dark dipped his head. "I will leave then. Tell me when you leave, and I'll say goodbye." He sat up and began to pad away from the strange stream.
Twilight was in thought. He had accepted the quest, and now had to gather the Eon Eight. It would not be easy, he knew. But he would try. His first stop would be the next town, known to be full of many Grovyles. He would ask if anyone had seen any of the Eon Eight, and start from there. He hoped this quest would be easier than he thought. Of coarse it won't, Twilight thought, why would it be? "Wait, Dark,"
Dark haulted.
"I'm leaving now."
"Oh, well, then. Goodbye."
