Chapter Three
The Next Town
Twilight watched Dark leave, and then gulped more water. He was a little hungry, but once he reached the next town, he'd get more food. After drinking a good amount of water, Twilight dimmed his ring glow and started heading for the next town. He was unfermiliar with its name, but knowing many Grass Types occupied it, Twilight had a feeling how to act.
He was not far when the sun peaked over the horizon. Twilight squinted at the brightness, but carried on. Soon Murkrows and Zubats were replaced with Pidgeys and Taillows. Twilight's mouth watered watching Zigzagoons and Sentrets running around, but officialy decided that he would eat at the town. As if knowing this, a Zigzagoon came running up to him in it zig-zag path, wagging its ragged tail, as if it knew Twilight. The Umbreon narrowed his eyes.
"Newbie!" The Zigzagoon cried. "Welcome!"
"Spare me," Twilight muttered under his breath, careful not to let the Zigzagoon hear. He passed by the Zigzagoon, and continued walking. He could hear the Zigzagoon trailing him, and let out a groan. Oh, Legendary, whatever your name is, why do I have to do this? Taunted by prey, leaving friends, and finding Pokemon that could be extinct. This quest so far, has not been good.
Once he finally shook off the Zigzagoon, Twilight sped up his pace, and saw the first house in the town. Outside a female Grovyle was sweeping her front wooden porch, and when she noticed Twilight, she gestured for him to go to her. Famished, Twilight had not choice but to. Perhaps she had food. But knowing Grass Types, this Grovyle might not have meat.
The Grovyle was different, for sure. She wore a band on the leaf that grew from her head, and a bandana around her neck. "My name's Rose," she said once she and Twilight were in her house. "I see you're a traveler. Well, I have food if you wish,"
Twilight nodded to Rose. "Thanks," he said weakly, "have you seen any... Others of me?" It was an awkward question to ask, but Twilight didn't know how else to put it. Many others hadn't heard of the Eon Eight.
Rose shook her head. "Nope, no Umbreons. There's an Espeon living 'round here, though, if that's what you mean. I called ya 'cause of it." She explained. "With all the Eevee evolutions bein' so rare, I'm guessin' you guys would, you know, wanna stick together. Also, my house is open to wary travelers. Haven't had any in a while."
"I see," Twilight's hopes shot up like a Pidgeot using Fly. What luck! And Espeon! Here!! "Where is this Espeon? I do need to speak to him or her,"
"Her," Rose corrected, "And you're not doing that yet. You need to rest and eat, I can see it all over you. How long you've been traveling?" Her eyes swerved in worry.
"Less than a day," Twilight muttered, feeling weak suddenly. He'd had been traveling for less than a day, and already he seemed to tired.
Rose's eyes then widened. "Truly? Less than a day?! Well, eat up, er, you didn't tell me your name." She had him seat himself at a low carven table, and she went to go get a meal. Twilight was nervous to see what she was getting him. Berries? Veggies? Twilight was almost sick at the thought of food that didn't come from something truly living.
"I'm Twilight," introduced Twilight as she was still getting food out of sight, "but really, I must see this Espeon--"
Rose appeared and placed a platter at Twilight's nose. "Nah-uh. You eat, then I take you to see Dawn. I won't let another traveler perish in these woods. Loads die every year, they do. They get lost, then a Necro Guard kills 'em. Shame, really..." She trailed off, lost in a sad thought.
Necro Guards? They're here?! Twilight knew finding an Espeon in the first town would come at a cost. With Necro Guards about, he'd probably get caught and killed, just like prey... "Fine, I'll eat, but I'm leaving after."
"Energectic one, you are." Rose laughed. "Righto, after you eat, I'll take you to see Dawn. The Espeon's been lonely lately, suppose it's a good thing you came." She smiled and went off to the porch again.
Twilight looked at his food. Berries. As he feared. Two were large, plump and a bright blue. The third was pink, and shaped as an upside-down heart. He sniffed them, and the pink one had more of a scent. He gingerly opened his mouth and nibbled the heart-berry. A sudden rush of sweetness blasted his mouth. It swarmed all around him, he felt so... Energized! He took a bigger bite of the heart-berry. More rushes! He felt so alive, with all this flavour. It swirled around him, even after he finished the berry. He felt as if he'd bounce off walls. He took a small bite of the blue berry. It didn't have the same sweetness as the heart-berry, but there was a hint of it. There was also a hint of the puckering taste blood often gave, and the stinging sensation that bone bits gave. And then the horrible taste of anything else. This berry almost tasted like meat... In a odd way.
"Like them?" Said Rose as she entered the house. "Ate the Pecha Berry, huh? Yeah, everyone likes those ones. Tentative on the Orans?"
Twilight guessed she meant the Oran Berries as the blue ones. "They taste... Different, yet fermiliar..."
"Used to meat, right? Yeah, 'cause meat has lots of flavours. So does the Oran Berry. The Pecha just has sweet, and that's why I only give one. Orans do more help than Pechas. Be sure you eat them, hear? Oran Berries regenerize strenth. Pechas seem like they do, but in the end, they make you more tired."
"Oh," was all Twilight could say. Perhaps he should learn more about berries, for they could help him. "Is there any other berries?" He asked, alreay guessing the answer.
"Oh, loads. Can't count 'em all. Most don't do much though, but some can really help." Rose explained. "Now, you wanted to see Dawn, right?"
Twilight nodded. "Yes, that would be great."
Rose nodded back. "Come on, then." She beckoned Twilight to follow, which he did, and she led him farther into town. There were many kinds of Grass Types, mostly Grovyles, but some Ivysaurs, Bayleefs and Grotles. She finally took Twilight to a large tent-like structure, inside were roars and moans. Twilight's rings glowed more with excitment as Rose opened the flap-like door, and imediantly a Croagunk --not what Twilight expected-- came over. A toothpick was in his mouth, waving around.
"Rosie, 'sup." His voice was scratchy and irritating. "Who's dis? A Umbreon! Great! Tanks Rosie, needed a pair."
Rose stepped in front of Twilight. "Right, Gunk, we've come to see Dawn. This guy wants to see her, that's all. Part of the Eevee family and all. Just let us in."
Gunk took out his toothpick and spat at the ground. "No can do, Rosie. No free shows. 'Less you'll give 'im up. I need a double show." He smiled. "Can just imagine! Gunk's Circus, featuring a rare Umbreon and Espeon! I'll make loads, Rosie. I'll share some, if ya like."
A circus?! This Dawn is part of a circus?! Oh, please Rose! Don't put me there!
Rose frowned. "Gunk, I'm not gonna have this wild-one do it. He's a real genuine Umbreon, wild-borne, you can't take that away from him!" She glared agrilly at Gunk.
"'Coarse I can. Did it to little Dawnie, didn't I? Can to it to-- Dusk! Yer name will be Dusk. Oh, brilliant! This is workin' Rosie! Big publicity! C'mon, give 'im up." Twilight noticed the spark of ambition in Gunk's eyes. It made him very nervous.
"My name's Twilight," Twilight growled, making his rings glow bright. He walked closer to Gunk and bared his teeth. "And if you even think of taming me, you'll be prey!" He got ready for a Shadow Ball in case Gunk reacted.
Gunk did react, but not in the way Twilight thought. He began to laugh. "Stupid Dusk! Tinks I'm gonna be scared! For Arceus's sake, I've seen Burmy scarier." Without warning, Gunk strapped a collar over Twilight's neck and pulled tight. He gagged, and almost choked.
Rose's leaved on her arms glowed green. "Release him, or I'll do it myself!" She hissed, her Leaf Blade attack ready to slash at Twilight's collar, which was hooked to a lease Gunk held.
With a wistle, a roar from inside bellowed. "And you'll be facing old Scratcher in dere. Understand?" He tugged on Twilight's lease, making him gagg again. Rose stopped her Leaf Blade, and looked down. Twilight didn't blame her, he was sure she thought Gunk wouldn't do this. Obviously, Gunk's ambition ruled over friendship. Gunk yanked on Twilight's lease again, pulling him into the tent. Twilight grabbed the dirt with his claws, but it did no good.
"I'll get you out!" Rose called to Twilight. "I promise!"
