Chapter Four
The Circus
So many promises, Twilight thought as he was thrown into a cage.
All around him were roars and moans, but this time, he heard the pain in each Pokemon's voice. Twilight began looking around, looking for some way to get out. He bit the bars with his strongest Bite. No good. Slammed them with a Shadow Ball, and still no good. Idiot! He thought. Why am I doing this? This was all pointless! Now I'm stuck in this prison!
"Hey, you're pretty strong." Came a sweet voice. Twilight looked over to see a sleek, purple Pokemon. She had a jewel on her forehead, and had long side brushes. Her tail was long and skinny, and near the end it split into two tips. She had large, pointed ears, and soft dark blue eyes. Twilight had never seen one before, but somehow he knew this was an Espeon.
"I guess," He muttered, "wish I was stronger so I could break out of here." His tail twitched and he felt his ring glow completely fade. The feeling of being trapped made him less hopeful.
The Espeon giggled. "I see, well I'm Dawn. You're a Umbreon, right? Wow, never seen a Umbreon. That's cool!" She waved her tail elegantly. It almost reminded Twilight of the Legendary in his dream.
With Dawn being in a cage across the room, Twilight found it difficult talking to her. "I'm Twilight," he said, "and I see you're an Espeon." He thought a moment. What was he to say now? 'Hey, Dawn, I had this crazy dream the other night, and I need you to come with me and find the rest of the Eight and defeat Necro. Sound good?' It was such a hard thing to ask.
"GRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAH!" Came a roar. Twilight looked at the cage below Dawn, and saw a Donphan hitting the cage door.
"Relax, Wheel." Dawn laughed. "Stop your escape plans and greet our new member." She smiled, looking down at her cage floor.
The Donphan named Wheel stopped his Rollout attack. "Hi, and welcome to hell." He grunted, then began Rollout again. Twilight noticed Dawn roll her eyes. Was Dawn the only one who likes this place? And why? Who in the right mind would like this horrible place. Wheel was right, it's hell.
"Don't mind him," she tisked, "always so... Negative. So Twilight, wanna meet the rest of the crew?"
Twilight's rings glowed a little in anger. Is she daft? "No," he spat, "I want to get out of here! I need to do something! I- I need to do this quest. And I need food!" He was already losing the Pecha Berry he ate earlier. "This place is horrible! Has it ever struck you, Dawn, that we are Pokemon, but are treated as some other kind of creatures entirerly?"
Dawn stared at him, shocked.
"Good on ya, mate!" Called Wheel. "'Bout time Dawn had some sense knocked into her." He continued his Rollout a third time.
Dawn fluffed up in anger. "Gunk treats us well, Wheel! And this is fun! Preforming for other Pokemon!" She stared angrilly at her cage floor.
Twilight didn't have time to talk. He looked over at a pair of keys hanging on a hook by a bigger cage. A bigger cage with a Ursaring inside. That must be Scratcher, and naturally he's by the keys. Twilight was already thinking of a plan. He'd knock down the keys with a Shadow Ball, then... He had no idea what. There were no Grass Types to use Vine Whip, and he doubted Dawn would help with Physcic, if she even knew it. He looked at the other Pokemon there. There was a Crocanaw, and a Rhyhorn, and a sad looking Stantler. There was also a pair of Ponyta and a Rapidash, and a cuple Phampys. Phampys! Twilight relized. Their noses might reach the keys, if I knock it at the right angle... He looked over at the Ursaring. It was sleeping, thank goodness.
"Hey, little Phampys!" Twilight whispered. They looked up at him. "Wanna get outta here?"
They both perked up. "What do we do?" Asked one.
Twilight gestured at the keys. "Listen, I'll knock them down, and you grab them, 'kay? Then unlock your cage, and bring the keys to me. Then we'll unlock all the cages."
The two Phampys brightened and nodded. Twilight turned to the keys and called up a Shadow Ball. Please, let this work! He fired. It hit. The sound of keys clanging onto the ground echoed in the tent. Twilight couldn't help but beam.
One Phampy began to reach with its truck. He was almost at it, when there was a eeeeeerrrrrraaaa of a squeaky door opening. Right by the keys, slammed the foot of the Ursaring, nearly hitting the Phampy's nose. Scratcher let out a horrible bellowing growl, shaking Twilight's cage.
"Idiot!" Cried Dawn. "Scratcher's cage is always unlocked! There's no way you can escape from here," She gave a little hiss. Twilight glared at her, giving a growl.
"You could at least try, nimwit!" Twilight retorted, then watched as Scratcher approched Twilight's cage. He grabbed it, pulled it off the cage bellow, and began to shake it vigorously. The forcefull shaking smacked Twilight against the sides, and he suddenly felt awfully nasious. It felt like it never ended, and also like he broke all his bones. He gathered energy for a Shadow Ball, but then landed on his face and it was lost. All this for Dawn, who is too tame to know what air is, Twilight thought, just as he vision began to blurr.
Then, Scratcher let out a roar. He put down Twilight's cage, and the Umbreon watched as the Phampys began Rollouts on Scratcher's legs. The Ursaring tripped, landing on the floor with a loud THUD, and a Phampy brought the keys to Twilight. They unlocked his cage, and Twilight grabbed them and unlocked Wheel's cage.
"Freedom!" Cried the Donphan. "Thanks, Twilight. I'll never forget this." He gave a trumpet blast and rolled away, the Phampys following him. Twilight went around, opening everone's cage. They all raced away, each thanking Twilight greatly. He only had Dawn's cage left, but he began to leave the tent.
"Hey!" Dawn cried. "Forget someone?"
Twilight looked at her. "Oh, sorry. I thought you'd want to stay, 'cause it seems you love this place."
Dawn looked down. "Yeah, I know. I was the most tame out of all these Pokemon, other than Scratcher. But that's not my fault! My parents, they dropped me off here, when I was young, and well--"
Footsteps were heard, and along with it, came Gunk's voice. "Alrighty, clowns! Time ta eat!"
"Save it for later," Twilight interupted as he started to unlock Dawn's cage. "We've no ti--"
"HEY!" Gunk's mouth hung open. He noticed Twilight in the act, and his face darkened. "YOU!!!" He leaped over and grabbed Twilight's lease before the Umbreon could run. He tugged so hard on it, it really did make him choke. Gunk pulled out a long, red rope, with a brass bead on the end. "BAD DUSK!!!" He shouted, and brought down the whip.
It hurt more than Twilight thought it would. The whip lashed his skin, and the bead bruised it. And before he could recover from the blow, Gunk whipped again. Even worse the second time. Then there was a third. And forth. Twilight felt himself bleeding, but for a fifth time it came down on his side. His rings didn't glow at all. His body stung all over, and he prepared himself for a sixth hit...
It never came.
Twilight opened his eyes to see the whip suspended in air by Physcic. Dawn. Gunk stared at his whip, and suddenly it lashed at Gunk. The Croagunk leaped in pain. "Aarrrgh!" He cried, and ran farther into the tent. The whip followed him.
Twilight looked over at Dawn, and saw she was still in her cage. Her jewel was glowing a mystical rainbow colour, but it the stopped. "I'm sorry," she said, looking down. "You were right. Gunk is horrible. I'm sorry I put you through that,"
"It's okay," Twilight said, standing up. "But please, can you take this collar off?"
